This research aims to open the emerging field of design governance in Australia, by considering the changing place of the architecture profession in built environment governance, and more broadly by theorising the role of architecture and design in the processes of governing: in fostering civic engagement, demonstrating values, and defining a common good. It explores the involvement of architects in the public sector, and the points were built environment design quality is mediated through regulation, policy, evaluation and education.
