Like many of its Pacific neighbours, Papua New Guinea faces extensive challenges due to its changing climate. The University of Queensland is leading the development of Papua New Guinea’s first Climate Resilient Infrastructure Guide, in partnership with the Economic and Social Infrastructure Program, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The development of this new tool is led by the School of Architecture, Design and Planning’s Dr Ray Maher, Dr Mubeen Ahmad, Professor Ali Cheshmehzangi and Associate Professor Mark Jones. The project combines international best practice with practical guidance on how to integrate climate-resilient and emission-reduction strategies into infrastructure to ensure that people can access, use and benefit from its facilities and services for a long time.
By bringing together diverse perspectives, best practices and considering Papua New Guinea’s unique context, the team aims to develop a valuable and user-friendly guide that will strengthen local capacity to plan and incorporate long-term sustainable infrastructure practices.
The University of Queensland is one of the world’s leading research institutions in climate resilience, infrastructure and sustainable development – bringing global expertise to support local knowledge for Papua New Guinea.
