Australian Institute of Architects visits UQ VisLab to discuss the future of the built environment

8 September 2026

The UQ VisLab recently hosted representatives from the Australian Institute of Architects for a discussion on the future of the built environment and the opportunities and challenges shaping architectural practice. The visit brought together Kim Richards, Executive Leader of the Institute’s Queensland Chapter, and Jasper Every, with Associate Professor Stephanie Wyeth from UQ’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning and Associate Professor Fred Fialho Teixeira, Director of UQ VisLab. Kim Richards’ current Institute role is listed as Executive Leader, Queensland. Architecture Australia

During the visit, Fred Fialho Teixeira introduced the group to research and technologies being explored through the UQ VisLab. The discussion considered how immersive visualisation, digital twins, spatial data and interactive environments can bring together different forms of built environment information and support new ways of examining design, construction and urban systems. The conversation focused on the changing conditions facing architecture and the wider built environment sector. The group exchanged perspectives on digital transformation, research, education and professional practice, considering how emerging technologies may influence how architects engage with complex spatial information, communicate design decisions and respond to future industry needs.

More broadly, the visit highlighted opportunities to strengthen connections between UQ research and the architectural profession through knowledge exchange, events and industry engagement. The VisLab provides a setting for bringing together researchers, practitioners and professional organisations around emerging approaches including data visualisation, immersive experiences, 3D spatial information and digital twin workflows.

The visit established a basis for continuing the conversation and exploring opportunities for a future event involving UQ and the Australian Institute of Architects. UQ VisLab thanks Kim Richards, Jasper Every, Stephanie Wyeth and Fred Fialho Teixeira for contributing to the discussion and sharing perspectives on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of architecture and the built environment.
