Master of Architecture - Current Students
The Master of Architecture is the second stage required to obtain a professional qualification in architecture, and builds on your core skills developed as an undergraduate.
Through your masters study at UQ you'll gain a greater understanding of why architecture is such a dynamic and demanding profession, making a positive contribution to the shaping of our built environment and our culture. You'll also hone the essential skills of an architect, and your abilities to design buildings and spaces with an inherent concern for human living and society.
You can choose from a range of courses that will develop your ideas about contemporary architectural practice. You'll challenge your thinking through topics such as housing and density, civic buildings and public space, and commercial architecture.
Throughout the program you'll learn from professional architects and leading researchers who have strong local industry links and work to advance the discipline of architecture internationally.
From 2023, the Master of Architecture program has been restructured and new courses will be offered. Students commencing their studies in 2023 will be enrolled in the new program structure. Continuing students who commenced prior to 2023 can continue to follow the program requirements from the year that they commenced, or they may be able to elect to follow the new structure (if eligible).
Each semester a ballot process is run for Master of Architecture design studio courses.
Studio classes have a capped enrolment; we keep each studio around the same size to enable an optimal studio experience. The ballot allows you to submit your preferences so that we may distribute class allocations fairly (instead of on a first-in, first-served basis).
Prior to the ballot, the School releases information about each of the studios on offer. This enables you to consider which studio you would prefer to complete. The ballot is open for one week and all students enrolled in core courses for the upcoming semester, or who were enrolled in the prior semester will be notified by email. The ballot dates and link will also be advertised on this page for any students who do not receive the email but are enrolling for the upcoming semester.
The ballot will allow you to nominate your top three preferences. After the ballot closing date, the School runs an allocation process with the aim of giving the majority of students their first or second preference. You will receive an email with the outcome and will be given one week to secure your place. Information including information on how to enrol in your studio will be included with the outcome.
Any students who miss the ballot, or do not enrol in their allocated course by the deadline, will be able to enrol in any remaining places in the studio courses following the ballot enrolment period. Enrolment in remaining places will be opened at a pre-advised date which will be published on this page beforehand and circulated by email. There will always be enough places for all students to enrol in a studio course, however sometimes some courses are full or have very limited places following the ballot allocation.
Semester 1 2024 ballot dates
The Master of Architecture design studio course ballot will open on Tuesday 19 December and will close at 11:59pm on Sunday 7 January 2024. The date/time of your ballot submission will not influence the outcome, so please take your time to review the booklet and consider your preferences. Studio course allocations will be announced by Friday 12 January. You will not be able to enrol in a studio course until you are notified of the ballot outcome.
Once announced, ballot places will be held until Monday January 22 2024. If you miss the ballot deadline or do not enrol in your allocated course, any remaining places will be opened for enrolment through mySI-net at 11:00am on Wednesday January 24 2024.
To take part in a semester-based Exchange, you will need to meet certain eligibility criteria both before and after applying through the Global Experiences Team.
The eligibility criteria for exchange and the program structure for the Master of Architecture means there is a set study plan that must be followed for a student completing their Master of Architecture degree and undertaking exchange during the program. There are also limitations as to when in the program the exchange can be undertaken without impacting on the duration of study.
When enrolling, ensure you follow the recommended Master of Architecture study plan (unless advised otherwise by an Academic Advisor).
If you are considering the option of a semester-based exchange during your Master of Architecture program, it is recommended that you meet with the Architecture Academic Advisor when commencing your program, to discuss your study plan for the entire program.
