About Mathew van Kooy

Mathew is a Principal at John Wardle Architects. Working across the Melbourne and Sydney studios, Mathew is a key contributor to the practice’s commercial buildings, masterplans, bridges and experimental projects. Greatly varied in scale, these include major civic projects such as the Tanderrum Bridge, the masterplan of a new Creative Industries precinct in Ultimo, the international headquarters of Aesop in Collingwood and smaller temporary projects including the NGV Pavilion. These projects continually afford Mathew the opportunity advocate for design to an audience of influential of city makers.

Regularly playing a key role in a range of high-profile design competitions, Mathew heads John Wardle Architects' developing portfolio of work in China, while also presenting the practice’s work to international awards panels and conferences. The highly awarded work of John Wardle Architects spans domestic dwellings, university buildings, museums and large commercial offices. Closely tailored to place and highly experiential in nature, the practice is known for buildings that celebrate individual craft, spatial delight and exquisitely resolved detail.

Mathew is alumni of University of Queensland, graduating in 2005 he received the Queensland Institute of Architects Memorial Medallion, the Board of Architects Queensland prize, Karl and Gertrude Langer Design prize and Innovaci Thesis prize. In 2016, Mathew was selected to participate in the AIA Dulux Study Tour for emerging Australian architects.
