Enduring Design Masterclass

The Masterclass will run from 28 June to 9 July and enrolment is open to architecture and design students, trades apprentices and professionals; there are limited places available.

UQ Bachelor of Architectural Design and Master of Architecture students can undertake the Masterclass via a #2 unit course (see eligibility below). Students will undertake the Masterclass in the winter break (40% of the assessment will be based on a design project completed during the Masterclass), with a final assignment due on 11 August 2021 (60% of the assessment will be based on an illustrated research essay focusing on the contemporary application of one of the building traditions covered during the Masterclass).

Topics covered

• The theory and practice of traditional building and design knowledge
• Hands-on skills including stone masonry, traditional carpentry and architectural drawing
• Indigenous, European and Regional perspectives and approaches to design
• Incorporating cross-cultural traditions in a contemporary design environment

Course overview

The 10 day program will cover

• Hands-on skills including stone masonry, traditional carpentry and architectural drawing
• Indigenous, Settlement and Regional perspectives and approaches to design
• Incorporating cross-cultural traditions in a contemporary design environment

28 June 2021 to 9 July 2021 (10 working days, weekends excluded)

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the course, you must have a demonstrated interest in architecture, design or trades.

The Masterclass will be open to undergraduate and postgraduate architecture students at UQ. All UQ students will enrol in the Masterclass through ARCH3341 – 

• Bachelor of Architectural Design students: ARCH3341 is on the BArchDes course list and once successfully completed can be counted as #2 units of Architectural Design Elective Courses;
• Master of Architecture students: once successfully completed, ARCH3341 can be counted as #2 units towards Part D of the MArch program.

It is recommended that students complete a self-progression check to ensure this course can contribute to program requirements.

Cost

UQ students pay as per a regular course. All participants will be required to wear steel-capped boots and pay for public transport to attend off-campus locations.

University of Queensland students enrolled in the Bachelor of Architectural Design (BArchDes) or Master of Architecture (MArch) program should ensure that they are eligible to enrol in ARCH3341 in Teaching Period 5.
