Two outstanding individuals connected to UQ’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning (ADP) were recognised at the Property Council of Australia’s 2025 People in Property Awards, which celebrate impactful contributions across the property and planning sectors.
Industry Impact Award Winner: Peter Hyland
Peter Hyland, Managing Director of Urbis and UQ ADP Industry Fellow, was awarded the 2025 Industry Impact Award in recognition of his decades of leadership and enduring influence on urban development in Australia and internationally.

An industry pioneer, Peter has helped shape cities and communities across the globe - leading landmark urban projects throughout Australia, Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East.
As a UQ Industry Fellow, Peter contributes actively to planning education, supporting students and academics to engage with contemporary industry challenges and insights. His role exemplifies the value of collaboration between academia and professional practice.
Professor Ali Cheshmehzangi, Head of UQ School of Architecture, Design and Planning, paid tribute to Peter’s contribution.
“Few people have helped shape our communities, cities and industry like Peter has,” Professor Cheshmehzangi said.
“His commitment, passion and visionary thinking make him a worthy recipient of this award, and we are honoured to have such a remarkable industry leader as part of our UQ community.”
Rising Star Commendation: Tom Kennedy
In memory of the late Matthew Schneider, the Matthew Schneider Rising Star Award celebrates emerging professionals who are already making a notable contribution early in their careers.
A Judges Commendation was awarded to Tom Kennedy, a final-year Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning (Honours) student at UQ and Assistant Planner at Therefor Group.

With two years of professional experience, Tom has been involved in development applications, policy advocacy and strategic planning, and has a strong interest in social and affordable housing.
Professor Ali Cheshmehzangi said this award recognises Tom as a future leader.
“Tom is already helping shape industry conversations while developing the technical and professional skills that will serve him throughout his career,” Professor Cheshmehzangi said.
“He represents the future of the profession - curious, engaged, and committed to positive change,”
