UQ EAIT Engagement Team visits UQ VisLab to explore digitisation in AEC

9 September 2026

The UQ VisLab recently hosted a visit from the UQ EAIT Engagement Team to discuss the changing role of digitisation across architecture, engineering and construction. The group included Vera Magazzeni and colleagues from EAIT Engagement, together with Fred Fialho Teixeira, Director of UQ VisLab, and Qianbin Xu from UQ’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

During the visit, Fred Fialho Teixeira and Qianbin Xu introduced the group to research and technologies being explored through the VisLab, including immersive environments, augmented reality and machine learning. The discussion considered how these technologies can connect digital models, spatial information and data to support new ways of visualising, analysing and communicating built environment research.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss how digital workflows are changing the AEC sector. Topics included the integration of immersive visualisation, augmented reality and machine learning into design, fabrication and construction processes, and how these approaches can support more connected relationships between digital information and physical environments.

More broadly, the discussion highlighted how the VisLab can support teaching, research and industry engagement through immersive visualisation, spatial data integration, computational design and digital twin research. These capabilities also create opportunities for students to engage with emerging technologies that are becoming increasingly relevant to contemporary AEC practice.

The visit established a basis for further discussion around potential engagement opportunities for UQ EAIT students and closer connections between research, teaching and professional practice. UQ VisLab thanks Vera Magazzeni and the EAIT Engagement Team, Fred Fialho Teixeira and Qianbin Xu for contributing to the discussion and exploring future opportunities around digitisation in the built environment.
